These days, there are hardly any taboo topics left. That wasn’t always the case in the past. Standardization was a pervasive principle of discipline and thus of social formation. This strict order gave rise to conventions and fostered oppression. Almost everything that used to be off-limits – that could not be questioned, articulated, or even thought – can now be reported freely in all media and discussed openly everywhere. Over the past decade, our society has become much more open in dealing with difficult topics. Intersexuality, however, remains a sensitive issue that is largely excluded from public life. The main causes of this are a lack of understanding, vague fears, and certainly also prejudice, a lack of acceptance, or simply ignorance. Intersex people are therefore often victims of exclusion, discrimination, and harm, and are stigmatized as outsiders from the very day they are born.
