Look at This City
In Prenzlau, Brandenburg, the political conflicts of our time are brewing.
Since January 2024, I have been visiting the small eastern German town of Prenzlau repeatedly with journalist Simon Strauß. We spoke with the mayor, representatives of the far-right party and left party, we visited the Bundeswehr barracks and the police station; and we immersed ourselves in the microcosm of this small Brandenburg town. In Prenzlau, on a small scale, all the major issues that
were shaking the nation in the run-up to the state elections in Brandenburg were being debated: social division, economic setbacks, and a hidden champion, an AfD politician who runs into his former schoolteacher, who is now running for Die Linke, the refugee crisis, nostalgia for the GDR, the Bundeswehr’s 610th Signal Battalion of the 1st Armored Division, and the war in Ukraine.
